MWC 2014 will officially be starting in only a couple of hours, many phone manufacturers have already announced what they are going to display at the show including Alcatel who has just taken the curtains off its mid-range Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 lineup of smartphones – the Idol 2 and Idol 2 Mini, both to be available in either 3G or LTE flavors.
First up, as the names suggest, the Idol 2 is the bigger sibling of the two, featuring a 5” 720p display. The LTE variant – Idol 2 S – is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM on board, 8GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front shooter, and has a 2,150mAh battery on board. The 3G variant comes with almost the same specs, except that it is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 2MP front camera and has a slightly smaller battery capacity of 2,000mAh. The Idol 2 also has a slightly smaller dimension compared to the Idol 2 S measuring at 136.5 x 70 x 7.3mm compared to 136.5 x 70 x 7.45mm. The Alcatel Idol 2 series will be available in around April or May for USD$274 for 3G and USD$342 for LTE, they will run on Android 4.3 out of the box, upgradeable to Android 4.4 KitKat.
As for the Mini versions – Idol 2 Mini and Idol 2 Mini S (LTE) – both these devices features a 4.5” qHD display. Powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM on board, they pack an 8MP rear shooter, and a 2MP front camera. Apart from the connectivity difference, the Idol 2 Mini features 4GB of expandable internal storage and 1,700mAh battery while the Idol 2 Mini S comes with 8GB of expandable internal storage and 2,000mAh battery. To be launched in the first week of March (in the US market at least), the phones will come with Android 4.3 out of the box and is upgradeable to Android 4.4. To be available in four colors, the 3G version will retail at USD$232 and the LTE version at USD$287.
