Think that Google Smart Glass is a cool product that could change the future? Well, check out Google’s latest project – a “smart contact lens” that is equipped with a tiny wireless chip and a miniaturized glucose sensor to help diabetics monitor the glucose level in their body, making it much easier for them to manage the disease. In case you are unaware about it, having diabetes is like having a second job. Diabetics will have to constantly track the glucose level in their body because a sudden spike or drop could turn fatal, and the only way to do so is by pricking their finger and squeezing drops of blood to tests. It’s a painful procedure and people may not be testing as often as they should.
This new smart contact lens by Google is aimed to change that painful and disruptive process of monitoring glucose level in one’s body. With a glucose sensor embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material, it can measure glucose in a person’s tears. According to Google, they might be able to embed tiny LED lights too so wearers can have an early earning if their glucose levels have crossed above or below certain thresholds.
It’s still a prototype of course, Google is currently looking for partners that could help develop apps to make measurements available to the wearer and their doctor. Check out Google’s blog post for more information.
