Officially, CES 2014 has not yet started but believe it or not, plenty of news already coming in from Las Vegas. One of them came from NVIDIA, who is having their press event as we speak.
Over there, the company have revealed a brand new mobile processor under their long-running Tegra series called the Tegra K1. One of the main features that Tegra K1 brings to the table is its 192-core GPU which is based on the company’s Kepler GPU architecture that was also present on NVIDIA’s desktop graphics cards.
Subsequently, the K1 is also the first mobile processor to support the company’s CUDA platform. The new NVIDIA K1 also supports DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4, tessellation and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. All in all, the company claims that the Kepler-based GPU within Tegra K1 is around 1.5 times more efficient than other mobile GPUs out there. As a comparison, Tegra 4’s GPU contains only 72-cores.
In terms of CPU, the Tegra K1 will be made available in two variants: one with 32-bit 4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex A15 cores and another with 64-bit CPU (codenamed “Denver”) with dual “Super Core” that is designed by NVIDIA themselves. The company expects that the 32-bit Tegra K1 processor will appear on devices within the first half of this year which then will be followed by the 64-bit variant in the second half.
