First Look: Sony SmartWatch 2, The Companion Wristwatch For Android Devices

The third of its kind since Sony Mobile (then known as Sony Ericsson) released their first Bluetooth watch back on 2007, the company today has unveiled the brand new Sony SmartWatch 2 alongside the equally new Xperia Z Ultra at Shanghai just few hours ago. According to Sony, SmartWatch 2 brings together improved performance, intuitive interface and standalone capability.

Made from aluminium and high polished plastics, the splash-proof Sony SmartWatch 2 is equipped with a 1.6-inch 220×176 transflective LCD display and features a new Android-like interface. It also built with Bluetooth 3.0 and Near Field Communications (NFC) connectivity for pairing purposes.

Just like the original Sony SmartWatch, users are able to check out variety of notifications via the new SmartWatch 2 such as missed calls, call logs, SMS/MMS, e-mails, Facebook and Twitter updates, calendar, and more. It can also be used to make, accept or reject call although you still not able to answer calls directly through it since Sony don’t equip such functionality into SmartWatch 2.

Sony SmartWatch 2 functionalities can be further expanded through apps that are downloadable from Google Play. Such examples are the Viewfinder app for remote photo taking, Presentation Pal to control presentations, mapping app, Runtastic to keep track user’s fitness level, media player controller and many more.

The Sony SmartWatch 2 still able to function even though if it’s not in sync with user’s Android devices. As a standalone watch, users are able to check out the time, set the alarm and read previously received notifications. In addition to supporting the standard 24mm watchstrap (a metal watchstrap is included in the box) which pretty much enabled users to switch to any watchstrap that they like, users are also able to change its watch faces and themes.

In terms of battery life, Sony claimed that the SmartWatch 2 is able to last from three to six days depending on one’s usage level.  Just like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, the company have yet to reveal the pricing for their new SmarWatch 2 but nevertheless, they have confirmed that it will be released throughout the world starting from September 2013.
