In a first of its kind, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry conducted an operation dubbed Ops Skyfall and raided a premises in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan where they suspected Jiwang.Org was operating from. After 5 months of surveillance, the operation seized computers and related equipment worth over RM30,000. Jiwang.Org is not the only site on the ministry’s radar, with over 32 more websites being monitored on their hitlist.
The question is that with services like Spotify, Deezer and the like, is pirating music really still so rampant? On the other side, it was noted that Jiwang.Org hosted almost every single album of Malay Artists published in Malaysia and that the copyright holders stood to lose at least RM10M over the past 5 years. Is it really necessary to put such a dent in the local music industry with all the legal alternatives? What do you think? Good riddance or OMGWTFBBQ?
