Following the trend set by Twitter, Facebook has now begun rolling out support for hashtags. To be available in stages beginning today, Facebook users can now add hashtags to their posts, as well as searching for them in the search bar, allowing users to add context to their posts or share their input as part of a larger discussion.
In line with the company’s privacy settings, however, only hashtagged contents which are made public can be viewed and searched on Facebook, which differs from other services such as Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Over the next few weeks, Facebook will begin enabling hashtags and also allow them to be interactable when you click on them.
The hashtag support is the first in the company’s attempts to “help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations”, and Facebook will continue to roll out more features in the future.
