Look at what Apple just quietly sneaked into its Online Store worldwide, including Malaysia – a new 16GB iPod touch. Do not be mistaken, it is not a 6th generation iPod touch, neither is it the 5th generation one that was announced last year, the new iPod touch is a cheaper variant of the existing iPod touch and carries the same dual-core A5 processor inside.
So what’s new in the new iPod touch? First up, it’s a whole lot cheaper. The 5th generation iPod touch (32GB) retails at RM1,049; this new device retails at only RM799. So what did Apple do for the cheaper price besides reducing the storage capacity? It’s a wee bit lighter (86 grams vs 88 grams) and it does not come with a rear camera. If it’s any consolation, it still has its front camera, allowing you to FaceTime away.
So what does this mean? If Apple is really expanding its reach by building cheaper, more affordable devices, does this mean that the company is working on a cheaper iPhone as well by compensating on storage and specs? Only weeks more to go before Apple’s developer’s program, WWDC 2013, let’s hope the company has some big surprise for us.
Visit Apple Online Store (Malaysia) for more information about the new 16GB iPod Touch. It will be available to ship in 4-6 weeks time and according to the page, it is still “Pending regulatory approval”.
