Remember the Sony Xperia SP? The mid-range smartphone from Sony Mobile was launched last month with little fanfare from the company, alongside the Xperia L. However, it appears that the Xperia SP has got a little something up its sleeve: the introduction of native support for the Sony PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller.
While there has been no official word from Sony Mobile just yet, the video below clearly shows how easy it is to pair a DUALSHOCK 3 controller via USB-OTG (one-time only) from the phone’s settings and then via Bluetooth for easy subsequent wireless pairing. According to Xperia Blog, this support is currently only seen on Xperia SP devices, and not on the other existing Xperia devices, including the flagship Xperia Z.
The video also mentions that the DUALSHOCK 3 controller will work on most games that list support for standard USB controllers, and the Xperia devices’ easy mirroring to a HDTV could technically transform an Xperia smartphone into a gaming console.
