The Malaysian Information Department has moved swiftly to remove fake statements that were uploaded onto its e-Akhbar and e-Press systems. One statement, titled “Perdana Menteri Secara Rasminya Meletak Jawatan” (Prime Minister Officially Resigns), which announces PM Datuk Seri Najib’s immediate resignation, as well as apologies to several opposition leaders, went viral via social networks.
In a press statement, the department’s Director-General Dato’ Ibrahim Abdul Rahman stated that the department has removed the fake statements to ease confusion among the public. He added that an internal investigation is already underway, and a police report will be lodged later. The department suspects that hackers may have accessed the two portals, although it has not yet been confirmed by the department itself.
