For local Kindle Fire owners out there, be prepared to see a new currency on your device’s Amazon Appstore very soon. Amazon has recently unveiled its own virtual currency called Amazon Coins that consumers will soon be able to utilize to buy apps and games at Amazon AppStore. At the same time, consumers will be able to use it for in-app purchases as well.
In general, the announcement doesn’t really change the way consumers purchase products on Amazon Appstore or how developers earn their income through the store’s ecosystem. Consumers are still able to choose between their credit cards (as usual) and Amazon Coins while developers will still earn their revenue in real money.
Developers of existing apps in the Amazon Appstore will not have to tweak their apps to accommodate the new currency although developers that have yet to publish their apps on the store must get their apps approved by 25 April so that those apps will be able to take advantage of Amazon Coin’s launch in May.
Amazon has stated that the company will be giving away “tens of millions of dollars” worth of free Amazon Coins at its launch for customers to spend. That being said, the currency will only be available to US customers for the time being. For more information, head on to www.amazon.com.
