Late last week, Nokia released the blueprints and development tools for anyone to produce their own back covers for the Lumia 820 via 3D printing. With 3D printing fast taking a foothold in the enthusiast community worldwide, Nokia was proud to announce that it was the first major phone company to “embrace the 3D printing community” after the release of the development tools.
As a result, the Lumia 820 now has the added key selling point of a super customizable back cover, which can be as practical as it is unique. It is no surprise, then, that Nokia announced a competition for the community. The Lumia 820 3D Printing Challenge is offering the best five design ideas a trip to this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. With a February 15 submission deadline, the contest has already seen some pretty interesting entries, from an integrated tripod and kickstand to a cool cover that changes design and colour based on ambient light and/or temperature.
What’s probably the best part of the competition is the winners are selected solely on their design ideas, so those without the necessary knowledge of 3D printing but have amazing ideas may still join. Those who are interested may find out more from the IdeasProject contest page here. Those who are interested in the development tools in building their own Lumia 820 back covers can find them here, here and here.
