How does it feel like to throw $7.5 million away?
Perhaps not literally, but a British man has done just that. An old hard drive containing 7500 Bitcoins, stowed away in a drawer at a time when Bitcoins were virtually worthless in 2009, was discarded by James Howells as part of the Brit’s IT equipment clearout. Howells only remembered of his stash of Bitcoins in the drive he had disposed of when news broke last week that Bitcoins were now going for about $1000 each.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much that Howells can do about it now. After contacting the local landfill, he was told by the manager that the hard drive could be buried anywhere between three to five feet deep in the landfill which is about the size of a football field. As Howells himself admits, there was virtually “no chance” of locating the hard drive again, especially when there is no guarantee of being able to recover the Bitcoins in the precious drive anyway.
