Over in Helsinki, Finland, the first Jolla smartphone is now in the hands of the first pre-order customer. The Sailfish OS-running smartphone, the first in the world, was finally unveiled to the world at an event organized by the company and its carrier partner, DNA. For now, those who have made their pre-orders back in May will be given priority to finalize their orders, and the company aims to deliver all pre-orders from the first batch by the end of this month.
From that point onwards, Jolla will also be opening its own webstore, where those interested can purchase the device, running on the new Sailfish operating system. Unfortunately, for now the Jolla smartphone is only available to those in the EU, but the company will be aiming for other markets in the near future.
For now, though, it is a time for celebration for the 90-man startup. In two years the company have switched CEOs three times, opened offices in its native Finland as well as in Hong Kong, and most importantly, developed a mobile operating system and designed a smartphone from scratch – a feat most major companies would be equally proud to match.
