Samsung Malaysia Electronics has today announced the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids tablet. The child-friendly tablet, touted as the first of its kind, was announced by the company back in August and contains features specifically tailored for kids.

The Galaxy Tab 3 Kids was not built from the ground up to be a tablet for kids. Instead, the tablet is basically the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablet, released in Malaysia earlier this year, and then added with a colourful, simple and child-optimised UI together with a whole suite of software, such as parental controls, pre-loaded educational apps and even a brand new Kid’s Store app store, which contains over 600 apps developed specially for kids.
The Galaxy Tab 3 Kids UI is highly simplified, as seen with the camera interface above
As for the hardware, the 302g Galaxy Tab 3 Kids sports a bright yellow exterior, and comes bundled with a Kids Case, which is a protective cover that also doubles up as a stand as well as containing the housing for the C Pen, a stylus that helps with certain educational apps.
Otherwise, the tablet retains the hardware of the Galaxy Tab 3, such as a dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, a 7-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1024 x 600, a 3MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing sensor, and a 4000mAh battery. The Android 4.1-running device has had its storage halved to 8GB on the Tab 3 Kids, but the microSD card slot allows for expansion of up to 32GB.
The Kids Case also doubles up as a stand, and can be propped up in two positions
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids is available from today at a retail price of RM799. Each purchase comes bundled with the Kids Case and C Pen. In addition, each purchase of the tablet will also come with a free augmented reality almanac on dinosaurs, where children can learn about the extinct creatures via an app on the tablet.
