After existing in a closed beta for the past year or so, Ingress is finally opening its doors to the public and going into a full release. The game moved away from an invite only platform last week, and now allows anyone to participate in the global alternate reality game.
Ingress itself is a game that allows players to live in an alternate reality via their Android devices. In this virtual world, there are two teams struggling to collect resources to supply the war effort. The Enlightened and The Resistance each collect exotic materials (XM) points from real world locations, and then use it to open portals, reinforce locations, and ultimately assault enemy territory.
There is also an Elite Agent challenge lasting until the launch date of 14 December. Players with the highest score will be able to submit a “creative social media submission” will have the chance to win a trip to Ingress publisher’s office in California. The winner will also go on to help write the next chapter of the game.
