Every year, Apple fans across the country have never failed to disappoint with every launch of a new iPhone. With local telcos holding midnight launch events, each one offers a spectacle as hundreds throng to line up to be the first owners of Apple’s flagship smartphone. Most of the time, the first in line would spend close to a full 24 hours lining up.
This year, however, things were slightly different. Each telco we approached regarding their midnight launch plans were rather…tepid in their response. The biggest issue for all local operators (as well as Apple resellers) was in the amount of stocks available – there may not be enough iPhone 5s or 5c to satisfy the demand.
At that point we were already wondering if this was to be the quietest iPhone launch ever in Malaysia. DiGi had offered a virtual queue to ease the congestion, and Maxis were not even having a full-blown midnight launch! Nevertheless, we decided to head through to the launch events organized by DiGi and Celcom to have our usual midnight coverage, hoping for the best.
Fortunately, we were not disappointed.
