A 12-year-old boy from Quebec has pleaded guilty to hacking charges in 2012 for the hacktivist group Anonymous, causing an estimated total damage of $60,000. Sites affected by the boy’s actions, such as those of the Montreal police, Quebec Institute of Public Health, and even the Chilean government, saw them bring offline for up to two days as relevant authorities scrambled to restore them.
Interestingly, the boy – whose identity is withheld due him being a minor – testified at a youth court that his actions were not politically motivated. Instead, he traded information he gathered from the compromised sites for video games.
He will be sentenced next month.
