IFA 2013 hasn’t even officially started yet but it looks like the heat is already on. HDMI Forum has just announced a new HDMI version with significant increase in bandwidth along with new features – HDMI 2.0. 4K or Ultra HD TV is definitely picking up, major TV manufacturers like Sony and LG have already showed off their new 4K equipment in Malaysia, MHL announced a new version that supports 4K streaming
The latest HDMI Specification offers an increased bandwidth of up to 18Gbps to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p), four times the clarity of regular 1080p Full HD media content. It will also offer 32 audio channel, “dynamic auto lip-sync” and additional extensions to CEC. Hardware wise, the HDMI connector will look identical to current version, making it backward compatible. The cable will also remain and according to the press release, current High Speed cables (category 2 cables) are capable of carrying the increased bandwidth.
