Someone at Crytek has been studying up on Apple naming conventions, because the new CRYENGINE will no longer be numbered.
Carl Jones, the Business Development Director at Crytek, explained that the constant updates to CRYENGINE 3 means that it’s practically a whole new system. From now on, they can work on updating the system without having to worry about creating new versions for release. In other words, it’s now software as a service.
The new engine will be ready to develop for all next generation consoles, while still being available for PC. New platforms are being planned for the near future. So Crysis 3 for Mac? Doubtful, chances are that the next platform will be Linux for developers of new consoles like the Steambox and Ouya.
Users of the free version of CRYENGINE 3 are also getting extra features that were previously only available to paying customers. Now excuse me while I go shopping for a new gaming rig before Monster Hunter Online shows up.
