Just as teased last week, Blizzard has just taken the wraps off the first expansion pack of Diablo 3. Called “Reaper of Souls”, the expansion – like “Diablo II: Lord of Destruction” – introduces a new act, a new act boss, and a new playable character class.
In “Reaper of Souls”, players will meet Malthael, the angel of death. Malthael has forcefully attained the black Soulstone which housed the soul of Diablo, whom players defeated in Diablo 3. “Reaper of Souls” takes place in the city of Westmarch, and pits players with new minions under Malthael’s control, in the new act.
The expansion also introduces a new playable character class called the Crusader. Probably inspired by the Paladin from Diablo 2, the Crusader has a slightly different combat style, described as Kotaku as a mid-range melee fighter. Combat skills include a shield bash and a skill called Falling Sword, which has a hint of the Paladin’s “Fist of the Heavens”.
In addition, the level cap for all characters has been increased to 70, and “Reaper of Souls” also include new endgame options, an overhauled “Loot 2.0” loot system and a new artisan, Mystic. On top of that, the Paragon system now does not have any level cap.
Unfortunately, the “Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls” expansion pack release date has not been announced, but it is available to play at the Gamescom show floor if you’re lucky enough to be there.
Oh, and that teaser page? It hasn’t changed yet at the time of writing.
