Sony Malaysia has launched two new hybrid PCs in its VAIO family today, with the introduction of the VAIO Fit and VAIO Tap 11. Featuring a new multi-flip hinge that allows it to be used in three different modes, the VAIO Fit aims to suit the computing needs of everyone while the VAIO Tap 11 currently holds the record of having the world’s thinnest body for tablets.
More on the new VAIO hybrid PCs after the jump.
VAIO Fit multi-flip PC
The new VAIO Fit is Sony’s take on multi-mode laptops. Featuring a foldable lid design that is inspired by Japanese origami, the VAIO Fit can be used in three modes: Laptop, Tablet and Viewer. These different modes are achievable due to the lid design, which can be partially separated from the screen and collapsed or folded, with the display securely held in place with strong magnets.
The VAIO Fit, with its brushed aluminium lid and chassis with soft-touch plastic at the bottom – is also available in three screen sizes: 13.3 inches, 14 inches and 15.5-inches. All three sport touch-enabled Full HD resolution displays featuring Sony’s Triluminos display technology and X-Reality Engine from its Bravia TV family. Also standard is the inclusion of the latest 4th-generation Intel Core processors, with up to 8GB of RAM pre-installed.
These laptops also come pre-installed with either Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro (depending on model). In addition, the 13.3-inch model – which weighs 1.31kg – comes bundled with a digitizer stylus, as well as a 8MP Exmor RS for PC rear camera at the bottom of the device. On the other hand, only the 15.5-inch VAIO Fit features dedicated graphics, which is an NVIDIA GeForce GT735M GPU.
In terms of connectivity options, the VAIO Fit sports two USB 3.0 ports (one with charging function) on the 13- and 14-inch models (there’s three in the 15-inch variant), HDMI port, and an SD card reader. Storage options include up to 256GB SSD, or up to 1TB hybrid hard disk with 16GB SSD cache.
VAIO Tap 11
Sony proudly proclaims the new VAIO Tap 11 as the world’s thinnest Wndows 8 tablet with Intel Core processors, and at only 9.9mm thick and weighing in at 1.1kg, it is hard to dispute that fact. The VAIO Tap 11 comes in two variants: one powered by a 4th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, and another with an Intel Pentium 3560Y processor. Interestingly, the VAIO Tap 11 further expands on the company’s OmniBalance design language first seen on the Xperia Z, with the iconic power button prominently featured on the new VAIO Tap 11.
The new VAIO Tap 11 sports an 11.6 Full HD touch display with Triluminos and X-Reality Engine, and uses Sony’s OptiContrast panel technology. Both variants feature an Exmor R for PC HD webcam and a 8MP Exmor RS for PC rear camera sensor. There’s also up to4GB of RAM (2GB on the lower-end variant), and both variants feature a 128GB SSD as standard.
Connectivity options for the VAIO Tap 11 include one USB 3.0 port, a microSD card slot, microHDMI port, NFC, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The VAIO Tap 11 also features support for stylus input, which is sold separately. Finally, each VAIO Tap 11 also includes a thin magnetic full-pitch wireless keyboard including a touch pad. It also doubles up as a nifty screen cover when not in use.
Pricing and Availability
Both the VAIO Fit multi-flip PC and VAIO Tap 11 tablet will be available in Sony Stores nationwide from December 2013. Depending on configuration, the VAIO Fit retails from RM3699 up to RM5999, while the Intel Pentium-powered VAIO Tap 11 retails at RM2999 and the Intel Core-powered Tap 11 will be available at RM3999.
