MediaTek is not a foreign name when it comes to smartphones and tablets as the company is responsible for producing processors that are equipped into those devices especially in the low and mid-range segment of the market. That doesn’t mean they don’t have much to show though as the company have just announced their brand new MT6592 system-on-a-chip (SoC) which is claimed to be the world’s first true octa-core processor for mobile devices.
The new MediaTek MT6592 SoC is equipped with eight ARM Cortex-A7 CPU cores that are able to run at a clock speed that goes as high as 2GHz per core. While the SoC is capable of running all eight core at the same time, its architecture is rather scalable and comes with scheduling algorithm that monitors temperature as well as power consumption that helps the processor perform optimally at all times.
Equipped with ARM Mali GPU, the SoC supports full HD display, H.265 and VP9 video codecs, 16-megapixels camera, and Ultra HD 4Kx2K playback. It also features MediaTek’s own in-house technology called ClearMotion which is said able to provide smoother video playback by converting video with frame rate of 24 or 30 fps to 60fps automatically.
To complete the whole package, the MediaTek MT6592 SoC also comes standard with multi-mode cellular modem together with the support for dual-band 801.11n Wi-Fi, Miracast, Bluetooth, GPS and FM tuner. The SoC is expected to be featured on Android Jelly Bean devices by end of 2013 followed by Android Kit Kat devices sometime in early 2014.
