Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 is all but confirmed to be equipped with a 64-bit processor. Since Apple released its 64-bit A7 processor in the iPhone 5s, reports that Samsung will be equipping its next flagship smartphones with 64-bit processors have been persisting ever since. This time, a senior manager from ARM once again seems to confirm the issue.
The unnamed manager was said to have spoken in a meeting with the Korean company, and reaffirmed plans to equip ARM’s 64-bit processor architecture into Samsung’s 2014 flagship devices. It is also likely that the processor will be developed by Samsung themselves, hinting at a new Exynos chipset.
Finally, the ARM official also stated that at the rate mobile technology is evolving, we could be seeing 128-bit processors hitting the market “in the next two years”. While most of the world’s computers still run on 32- and 64-bit architectures, a 128-bit mobile chipset seems extremely overkill. However, the ARM official cites progresses in the mobile world such as fingerprint and face recognition technologies which require more powerful memory capacity could signal a shift into 128-bit processors – though it was noted that this was more of a “possibility than a set plan”.
