Samsung’s been very quiet on its efforts in developing its home-brewed mobile operating system, Tizen, for quite some time now. As it stands, the company was reportedly ready to announce two Tizen-based smartphones in August and September this year, but that didn’t happen. Later on, it emerged that development on the platform was taking much longer than expected, leading to rumours that Samsung were ready to cancel the entire project altogether.
However, a new report reveals that the latest iteration of Tizen, version 3.0, may finally be unveiled at the company’s upcoming developer conference in Seoul. Early indications of the operating system hints of a “flat” user interface, and is apparently influenced a lot by Microsoft’s Windows Phone and, naturally, Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.
In addition, Samsung also has plans to bring Tizen to power its smart TVs. Kim Hyun-seok, head of Samsung Electronics’ visual display unit, called Tizen a “significant investment”, and there has been “much progress” in the company’s Tizen-based TVs. However, the company will be releasing a Tizen smartphone before a Tizen TV, with an expected release date sometime in 2014.
