In addition to the announcements of the new Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2 tablets, Microsoft also announced its new Surface Remix Project. The initiative aims to explore new possibilities with the Touch Cover 2 keyboards, which sports 1092 sensors underneath the touch-style keyboards. Interestingly, Microsoft already has one unique Touch Cover 2: it’s the Surface Music Kit limited edition Cover, made for DJs, both professional and aspiring ones alike.
Article continues after the jump.
The limited edition Surface Music Kit is a unique Touch Cover 2, which loses its QWERTY keyboard in favour of a set of sliders and buttons akin to a mixing table. It is compatible with the Surface 2, Surface Pro and the Surface Pro 2. The accompanying mixing app will install automatically once the unique Cover is snapped to a Surface tablet.
The app contains presets for everything needed to mix a song, such as vocals, drums, bass, keyboards as well as various other templates. Users can then create their own music (or remix other existing ones) using the unique Touch Cover. The Touch Cover 2 is also pressure-sensitive, allowing more intuitive uses for the Cover, such as controlling beats, vocals and instruments. The sliders control volume as well as audio effects.
Finally, the app automatically syncs the beats per minute (BPM) for faster and more accurate mixing. To aid new mixers, the Kit also provides recommendations on which sounds and samples work better together. When a mix is done, users can export them into MP3, WAV or WMA formats and share to the world.
Microsoft has already roped in DJ and Linkin Park member Joe Hahn as a product ambassador, while the program will also select the best user-submitted mixes into an album release in the future. For now, the #RemixProject competition is offering a free Surface 2 with Surface Music Kit for the most creative Vine video submissions on how you plan to remix your life.
That’s not all, of course. In the long run, Microsoft sees the Touch Cover 2 as having even more possibilities for unique Covers. The video below demonstrates the endless possibilities that can convert the Touch Cover 2 into something truly amazing.
