Gabe Newell has been championing Linux as the next big thing for gaming. Going as far as to bring the Steam platform to the OS. He reiterated this point at the recently held LinuxCon in New Orleans.
There were hints about the mysterious Steam Box, which will apparently run on Linux. However, whether developers will be willing to build for yet another platform is doubtful. Considering how many games don’t even make the jump from console to PC. Computer gamers will also still face the issue of drivers for their components not always existing on Linux. And no, not everyone has the option of compiling their own software to make things work.
Fortunately, Valve is also helping out on that end by co-developing a debugger for Linux. They are also contributing funds to the LLDB debugger project.
This is nothing new. Considering that Newell has made his extreme distaste for anything with a closed eco-system. Particularly about how Windows 8 is the worst thing to happen to PCs in this history of mankind. The idea here is that everyone should be allowed to create and mod their games as they want.
In other news, just get the Steam Box out already.
