Once a forerunner in the mobile industry, the Nokia of today is consistently lagging behind today’s major players such as Apple and Samsung. The latest leaked image showing a Nokia tablet epitomizes the Finnish company’s sensational inability to keep up with consumer demands.
The tablet in question is not the NVIDIA Tegra-powered tablet running on Windows RT, but a new one powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset – but still running on Windows RT. The Verge notes that the tablet is indeed a real project, and may be unveiled sometime at the end of September. The 4G LTE-enabled 10.1-inch tablet looks set for a US-first release, with support for both AT&T and Verizon networks.
It is still too early to determine if the device will make its way outside the US, but perhaps the main question should be “Why Windows RT?” Microsoft’s Q4 earnings report in July revealed that the Surface RT cost the company $900 million in losses due to a combination of poor consumer response and a larger-than-necessary stock inventory for Microsoft’s first tablet. Nokia’s first tablet project may end in tears.
