It’s not exactly news that BlackBerry has been struggling to compete with Android and iOS powered smartphones. However, the company has announced that it formed a committee to review its options. These include the possibility of joint ventures, partnerships or even just selling the whole thing off.
Ideally, the plan is to increase sales of the BB10 powered smartphones; but current trends aren’t looking so good. There are signs that the high end smartphone market is reaching the saturation point as both Apple and Samsung have failed to meet sales estimates. Although admittedly those two do have some ridiculously high expectations.
I wonder if it would be better for the Canadians to focus mainly on lower cost phones to cater to a larger market. Picking and choosing battles more carefully instead of charging in and trying to take the leading manufacturers head on. The Q5 looked like a step in the right direction, although it’s a bit early to tell if it will make things better.
The good news in all this is that BlackBerry shares jumped by 5% after the announcement. So it’s not all bad.
