In addition to Jolla’s earlier announcement on its management level reshuffle, Jolla chairman Antti Saarnio also let out a key bit of information: Sailfish OS, the MeeGo-based mobile operating system developed by the company, can be installed and run on Android devices.
Saarnio, who had previously revealed that the first Jolla smartphone will be announced later this month, has confirmed that Sailfish OS not only can run Android apps, but also be run on Android devices. As Talouselama reports, Sailfish “will also work on many Android devices”.
New Jolla CEO Tomi Pienimäki, who will replace Marc Dillon on May 6, also added: “It’s very important for us to be compatible with Android both in software and hardware. That way Sailfish will become a broadly used operating system”.
While it has been known for a while that Sailfish OS can run Android apps, the news that the operating system can also be installed on Android devices is, potentially at least, yet another piece of good news and a brilliant move by the company’s software development team. It means that those interested to try this alternative mobile operating system can try it out by simply rooting their Android devices. Of course, the user experience would not be the same, but this compatibility will again lower the barrier that may prevent interested parties in trying out this new platform.
