Running on Google’s Chrome OS, a Chromebook is designed with Internet connectivity in mind as majority of its applications (consisted of well-known Google applications such as Gmail, YouTube and many more) are cloud-based. Chromebook has yet to be officially released in Malaysia but somehow, it made an unannounced appearance at yesterday’s official launch of Yes 4G partnership with Konsortium Transnasional Berhad (KTB) to deliver 4G service on selected KTB buses.
This particular 12.1-inch notebook is part of Samsung Series 5 Chromebook family and while we not able to determine its actual specification, it should be powered by a dual-core 1.3GHz Intel Celeron 867 processor judging by its XE550C22 model number. By that, this Chromebook is supposedly to also feature 4GB RAM and a 16GB solid state drive.
Interestingly, there is a label that says “WiMAX MAC” underneath this particular unit which might suggests that it is equipped with built-in WiMAX connectivity. Not to say that we are baffled at the label’s existence since this unit belongs to Yes 4G who utilizes WiMAX standard for its network but to our knowledge, Samsung or any other manufacturers have never release Chromebooks with built-in WiMAX before.
We will further discuss the topic above in a separate post but let’s continue with our brief first look at the Samsung Chromebook right after the jump, through the Read More link below.
Look closely and you will be able to see the WiMAX Mac label just underneath the notebook’s manufacturer’s label.
While a Chromebook is as basic as a notebook can be but our brief encounter with the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook does open our eyes to us a thing or two about the notebook’s form factor. First, anyone that frequently used Google Chrome browser should immediately feel at home on Chromebook as the Chrome OS interface looks, feels and works exactly like the popular Internet browser. It also able to boot up very fast – this unit powers up in just under 5 seconds.

Despite being designed as a low-cost notebook, the build quality of the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is not far off from the company’s higher-end notebooks. The brightness level of the notebook’s display is quite acceptable and its island-style keyboard is not too shabby as well although the touch pad on this unit is somehow not so responsive.

In United States, a Samsung Series 5 Chromebook comes with a price tag that starts from RM 1,401 (USD 449.99) onwards but Yes 4G has yet to reveal any details for the notebook at the time being. For the meantime, take a closer look at it through the images below.
