Yesterday’s announcement of Mozilla’s new mobile operating system, Firefox OS, has just gained a new hardware partner. Besides Alcatel One Touch, ZTE, Huawei and LG, Sony has just announced its plans to work on its own devices running on the platform. The move comes as part of a partnership with Telefonica, where the two companies will work together to develop a handset running on Firefox OS.
It is particularly interesting to note this latest development from Sony. Back in January, Sony Mobile’s Product Marketing Manager for Xperia, Stephen Sneeden stated in an interview that the company is planning on moving away from the entry level market to retain its status as a a “premium smartphone provider”. Its latest plans to work on a Firefox OS – an OS that focuses very much on the low-end tier – does seem to contradict with Sony’s statement last month. Regardless, it is very much good news for the fledgling platform from Mozilla.
