Somewhat disappointingly, Sony’s keynote presentation at this year’s Mobile World Congress failed to capture the imagination. Of course, they jumped the gun and went ahead to announce the Xperia Z flagship smartphone last month at CES 2013, which would explain the lack of new products to announce this time round. However, Sony did finally announce global availability for the almost-impossibly thin Xperia Tablet Z – which was already announced in January for the Japan market.
The international version of the Xperia Tablet Z will be internally similar to the one announced for the Japanese market. To recap, the Xperia Tablet Z will sport a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz processor with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (64 for the US market edition), and the standard WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC connectivity as well as microSD card support. The display will be a super-sharp 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 screen with Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2. There’s also space in the 6.9mm frame for an 8.1MP camera with an Exmor R sensor as well as Sony’s S Forcee surround sound technology.
The Xperia Tablet Z, which will weigh a mere 500g, will be available sometime in Q2 at a price of $499 for the 16GB model and $599 for the 32GB model. A white model of the Xperia Tablet Z will also be available, but only in official company outlets.
