As promised by Joe Belfiore about six weeks ago, some users of Windows Phone 8 are finally seeing an option to keep the WiFi connection on when the phone’s screen switches off. However, it appears for one reason or another, Microsoft have not rolled out the update en masse. The Verge reports that WP8 devices in the US have not received their OTA updates, codenamed “Portico”, possibly due to carrier restrictions.
The “Portico” update adds an extra option in the WiFi settings to keep WiFi on “when screen times out”. Interestingly, the update has so far only been seen in HTC’s WP8 devices, namely the 8X and 8S. Perhaps there is some benefit to being a signature WP8 device – much like Android’s Nexus line.
