It is an unheard of and totally impossible scenario for the common consumer to hear. Apple shacking up with Google, its single biggest rival in the tech industry? Comparable to Manchester United and Liverpool, or cesium and water – they just don’t go well together. But apparently, such pacts between the two tech giants are indeed possible and, in fact, are pretty common.
The Business Insider has reported that a consortium led by Apple are attempting to buy $500 million worth of patents from Kodak, who have recently filed for bankruptcy. The eye-watering amount is tabled to buy out 1000 of Kodak’s patents (and ease the company’s monetary issues in the process), all of which are related to its imaging technology, presumably in a move to challenge Nokia’s prowess in imaging technology for smart devices.
The main reason behind such an unlikely pairing of companies, according to the Business Insider, is a means to avoid any potential patent infringements, such as the ugly mess that is Samsung vs Apple.
It’s nice to see these large conglomerates learning to share, don’t you think?
