The global football governing body FIFA had announced earlier that it will experiment with goal-line technology this year, with the FIFA Club World Cup to be the first official tournament to be the first to use the Hawkeye and GoalRef systems. However, they seemed to miss the point of the technologies in its latest decision prior to the start of the tournament next week.
FIFA has now decided that the use of the Hawkeye and GoalRef systems are optional, with match referees able to decide on using them 90 minutes before kick-off. Not only that, they also have the power to overrule the systems’ findings on the pitch – a decision which makes no logical nor scientific sense.
Looks like manager rants on the whether the ball crossed the line is set to continue, for better or worse.
