Still on mapping news today, but on a brighter note – for Nokia, at least. Some time back Nokia proudly announced that four out of five cars with navigation systems use Nokia maps. It looks to further increase that trend, as yesterday Nokia announced a new deal with BMW to power its navigation systems on the next flagship 7-Series.
In addition to the standard mapping services, the navigation system will also introduce new features, such as Enhanced 3D City Models and Motorway Junction Objects, as well as an Eco Pro Route option which maps out the most fuel-efficient route.
But that’s not the only deal Nokia signed yesterday. They’ve also gone and inked a deal with Garmin (yes, Garmin – a competitor in mapping services) to supply its global Transit and Pedestrian Content (TaP) for Garmin’s new Urban Guidance function, which allows Garmin and NAVIGON-branded navigation apps to generate routes and directions for driving, walking and also for public transport. Urban Guidance will soon be available via in-app purchases on Android and iOS.
