Acer has unveiled a slim and portable graphics enclosure for its Thunderbolt 3-equipped laptops. Also known as an external Graphics Dock (eGPU), the Taiwanese company is planning to eliminate the need for users to sacrifice graphics performance for portability.
Acer’s eGPU houses an integrated Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, which makes it different compared to the Razer Core that supports a full-sized desktop GPU. The graphics dock itself weighs a mere 700 grams and it measures 245 x 130 x 22.8 mm, making it easy to carry around if you choose to do so.
The Acer eGPU connects to Acer laptops that have Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) equipped, namely the Aspire Switch 12 S, Aspire R13, Alpha Switch 12, and more. Some other ports that Acer has included in the eGPU would be three USB 3.0 ports, four HDMI ports that can simultaneously power four 4K displays, two DisplayPorts, one gigabit LAN, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Not only that, the dock will also include its own 135W power supply unit.
Acer has not revealed any pricing information for Malaysia, but it did say that the device will be launching officially in Q3 2016. Judging from the company’s strong presence in Malaysia, it won’t take too long for Acer to bring it in, as long as the demand is there.
