SIM Kad Rakyat 1Malaysia (SR1M) is one of the latest products under the 1Malaysia program. The prepaid SIM card is part of the BR1M initiative and aims to “benefit the people of Malaysia” with affordable internet, calls and SMS rates, as well as provide Malaysians with quality services that are comparable with the big local telcos.
For just RM5.90, you can get a starter pack and enjoy the low call and internet rates offered by SR1M. The call and SMS charges are RM0.08/block (the charging block is not mentioned anywhere on its website) and RM0.08/SMS to all networks nationwide, which is definitely one of the cheapest in the market right now. As for data, the pay as you use rate is pretty standard at 5sen/MB, but you can opt to sign up for a monthly quota of 1GB at only RM17 a month.
We’re not quite sure if the 20% rebate is still available though, this image is taken off SR1M’s Facebook post dated in September 2014
SR1M is in line with the government’s efforts to bring Internet to all and to encourage the use of smartphones and communications technologies, especially those residing in rural areas of the country. The main target users of SR1M are low and middle-income earners, as well as school leavers. SR1M is based on Clixster Mobile, an MVNO which rides on DiGi’s network, but offers a much more affordable rate compared to the latter two.
