Amazon has acquired Double Helix Games for an undisclosed sum. This news comes on the heels of reports that the company is preparing to directly challenge Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo in the console market.
Double Helix is the studio responsible for the current Xbox One exclusive Killer Instinct, as well as Front Mission Evolved. They are also behind the recently announced updated Strider from Capcom. Meanwhile, Amazon is already in possession of its own games studio. However, Amazon has been mainly sticking to mobile games with titles like Air Patriot and Airport Mania HD Free.
Reports indicate that Amazon’s console will cost less than US$300, and also offer the video and music streaming services that we have become accustomed to. It will apparently also run on Android, which may put Amazon’s console in direct competition with Ouya instead of the three gaming giants it intends to challenge.
