Alongside the new Surface Pro 2, we have also managed to have a brief hands-on experience with the new Type Cover 2 for the Surface family. Yup, you read that right – the new Type Cover 2 is compatible with the whole Surface line-up including first generation Surface RT and Surface Pro as well as the newer Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.
One of the major traits that differentiate Type Cover 2 from its predecessor is the backlighting on its keys. Not only that, the Type Cover 2 also comes with proximity sensor that enables the cover’s lights to be turned on and off automatically depending on user’s presence. Apparently, the throw distance of the Type Cover 2’s keyboard is shorter than its predecessor which should make typing on it feels faster. However, our time with it were rather too brief to detect the differences.
Meanwhile, the area surrounding Touch Cover 2’s keyboard is draped in suede-like material that is similar to Touch Cover as opposed to the grippy plastic on the original Type Cover. The use of the material extends to the back of Touch Cover 2 as well which is again fairly different from the original Touch Cover.

Another noticeable change that Type Cover 2 has is the absence of touchpad with mechanical click buttons. Instead, Type Cover 2’s touchpad resembles the one on Touch Cover. At the same time, the new Type Cover 2 is 0.6 mm thinner than the original Type Cover which is already quite thin to begin with and not to forget, Type Cover 2 is available (at least in U.S) in four different colours rather than just plain old black for the original Type Cover.
Priced at USD 129.99 (RM 413) which is similar to the original Type Cover, the change to backlit keyboard for Type Cover 2 has certainly made the cover even more attractive than before. Just like the original version, the Type Cover 2 continues to provide the feel of traditional tactile keyboard for Surface tablets in a slim package while acting as a tablet cover.
